The Contract
Seeing Liz again the next day couldnât come any sooner. I stayed up as late as I could, scribbling anything that came to mind down on my tablet. While I was writing, I found myself smiling more than once without even realizing it, just imagining all the stuff we could do together.
She was coming over to my apartment this time, which was new for me. I only moved a few months ago, and so a few boxes remained strewn around my apartment, some only half-empty.
I furiously washed dishes that had been there for days and used my whole arm to sweep an army of empty Monster cans into the trash. I was embarrassed about the mess, even with no one here, and a blush burned my face as I finished cleaning.
I wasnât much of a cleaner. My apartment usually had energy drinks, dirty dishes and art supplies all over the place. But Lizâs house was clean. Like, borderline freaky-immaculate. I didnât want her to think I was gross or something, so I spent the better part of the day making the tornado that was my place presentable.
I was really guarded around people. No one had been in my old apartment either, not if I could help it. I grew up with kids coming in and out of my foster home all the time, pulling my hair, spitting gum at me, forcing me into corners and bullying me for anything they could pick on. My many foster parents didnât care much, eitherâ I think they had enough to juggle, and were just glad I was the quiet one.
I learned early to make myself quiet and small in the world, and it was a strange and uncomfortable feeling, wanting to let someone in.
I was using the broom I bought weeks ago with the tag still on it when I heard someone knock on my door. It made me jump, and my heart skipped as I threw it into the closet and sped to the door.
When I opened it, the smile fell from my face. A gruff, bloated man in a mail uniform looked down at me from what felt like a whole 7 feet, and handed me a bunch of mail with a straight face.
âMailbox downstairs is full.â He grumbled, and I blushed. It had been a few weeks since I opened it.
âThanksâ¦â I said, and he nodded, quickly descending back down the rickety stairs.
I turned around, frowning, and put the heap of mail down on my kitchen table. She told me she was coming, like, an hour ago. She should have been here already.
I tried not to cry as I attempted to pry into the glue that held a letter together with my fingers, when I heard someone's steps in the hallway.
âAlice?â
My head snapped up and out into the hallway, where Liz was peering into my apartment, clutching a handbag strung over her shoulder.
âHey!â I greeted, a little too enthusiastically, my face immediately splitting into a wide grin.
She smiled, crossing
